Collecting data is big business.  In fact, there's a name for it, Big Data. Some of the traditional sources include data derived from the news media, public records, social media, blogs, customer profiles, company reports, and equipment logs. Due to the volume of the data collected, man companies have found their current data management tools are inadequate to the task.  Why? Three reasons:  

First, the quantity of data collected from several expansive and newer sources such as Facebook, witter, LinkedIn, blogs, photographs, is overwhelming.  For example, it's estimated that business data doubles somewhere between a year and a year and a quarter.   Second, the speed at which the data is produced.  One reference I read was that Wal-Mart processes one million transactions...

One Step at a Time

In my last post I referenced and made the suggestion to read and invest time in doing the exercises offered in Tony Schwartz's book, The Way We're Working Isn't Working.  

In the course of talking with some subscribers and two of the clients I'm working with, they each said, in their own words, 'you suggest a lot of good books. I just get into one and you're talking about another one. I don't have time to read them all, let alone take what I've read, think about it, and use what I learned.  Any ideas on how to get more from what I read and do something with what I've learned?'

Suggested Reading:  The Way We're Working Isn't Working by Tony Schwartz, Jean Gomes, and Catherine McCarthy.

In late 2010 I wrote an article and presented a webinar on the work of Jim Lohr and Tony Schwartz of LGE Performance Systems and their book The Power of Full Engagement. Their book, The Power of Full Engagement is one of my ten favorite books in that it changed my focus from capitalizing on my time to capitalizing on my energy.  In other words, gaining more from quality time versus the quantity of time in relation to performance results.

Over the years I have read books written...
